Black Widow / No Time to Die trailer review

Image
The beginning of December has been accompanied by the arrival of the trailers for two of 2020’s biggest releases; one being Marvel Studios’ Black Widow , and the other being the twenty-fifth James Bond movie No Time to Die . Both are easily my most anticipated films of the coming year, so naturally I was awaiting the debut of their respective trailers with much excitement. As  Black Widow 's trailer premiered first, that's where I'll start. On the whole I think it was a satisfactory preview for the first cinematic chapter of the upcoming fourth phase of the MCU. I found a fair bit to like in it, starting with the beginning. The trailer opens with snippets of Natasha’s dialogue from Avengers: Endgame about having nothing before joining S.H.I.E.L.D., which plays out over a series of clips from previous films, as well as a few original shots from this forthcoming entry. I think this was the best possible way for the trailer to start; it has a sombre mood that feels very ap...

Spider-Man (2002) review

Throughout the long history of Marvel Comics, few if any of their characters have achieved the level of fame and popularity that Spider-Man has. He has had a strong connection with comic book readers ever since his debut in 1962, largely due to him being a more relatable character than other superheroes as his problems were far more common and everyday than most others. With the growing popularity in superhero films over the following decades, several studios and filmmakers made numerous attempts to bring Spidey to the silver screen but none ever came to fruition; that is until 2002, when the web slinger finally made his cinematic debut thanks to Sam Raimi. The film proved to be a massive success and helped ignite the superhero craze that would later come to dominate Hollywood in the following decade. Looking at the film now, how does it shape up after twenty years? Spider-Man is neither a perfect movie or a great one; it has a lot of problems with both its story and characters. But th...

Titanic review

On April 14th 1912, one of the greatest tragedies in history occurred. On her maiden voyage to New York, the RMS Titanic struck an iceberg in the middle of the Atlantic Ocean. Despite the best efforts of the ship's crew, they ultimately failed to save her, and in the early hours of the following morning, after a long night of terror and panic, Titanic sank to her watery grave and claimed the lives of more than half of her twenty two hundred passengers. In her day the ship was known for her vast size and strength, but her tragic fate was ultimately what sealed her place in history. To this day she remains at the bottom of the ocean, slowly crumbling away. Naturally the story has been recreated on the big screen numerous times, with by far the most famous being the 1997 epic blockbuster Titanic. James Cameron's depiction of the event swept the Academy Awards, earning a then record eleven wins and even reigned as the most successful film ever made for over a decade. Though it was ...
